This week we focused on microphones and recording, jumping into small groups to create a podcast lesson. The lesson was intended to be an introduction to microphones and sound editing, appropriate for beginner use. It was definitely nice to do some group work and play around with using soundtrap to record, but I found a couple of elements particularly interesting/challenging. Firstly, I am a visual learner so even trying to explain how to set up the microphone without any visual cues was difficult. I had to do a couple of takes and constantly refer to out little script to ensure I was using the right terminology. Secondly, I found it difficult to make sure our groups terminology and instructions were appropriate for the learners, as often highly specialised music gear can come across as jargon. Even as we were recording the podcast I became really aware of annunciation, tone and pace. These are all really important factors I will need to consider for my own future practice, in particular how my actions and words within lessons will impact each member of the class, with a diverse set of skills and learning styles that will differ from my own. All in all, it was a fun task to do and definitely helped refresh my memory after a long break. Below is our script/plan along with our podcast.
